Rabat offers travellers a slower paced, more laid-back experience than Morocco's other imperial cities, Marrakech and Fez. As well as being a modern, eco-friendly capital with green spaces, wide boulevards and well-equipped beaches, it's also home to many historic monuments, including some fascinating relics of its Moorish past. The unfinished minaret of Hassan Tower is part of a mosque complex that dates back to the 12th century, and Chellah is an ancient Roman and medieval ruins site with a serene a garden inhabited by storks.
Another must-see is the UNESCO-listed Oudaias Kasbah; a short walk from Rabat's centre, this picturesque fortress overlooking the Atlantic has a museum and a residential area with distinctive blue-and-white walls. Meanwhile, Rabat's medina is a maze of historic streets and bustling markets, where visitors can try authentic local food and shop for traditional handicrafts.
