China Uncovered: 12 Days through Beijing, Xian, the Yangtze and Shanghai

Upon arrival in Beijing, you’ll be welcomed by your local guide and transferred to your accommodation. The rest of the day is at your leisure to relax or explore the surrounding area, where local eateries and shops await. 

Begin your journey with a visit to the Temple of Heaven, a sacred site once used by emperors to pray for good harvests. Watch locals practicing morning exercises in the surrounding park. Continue to the iconic Tian’anmen Square and delve into the rich history of the Forbidden City. End the day with a walk through a traditional Beijing hutong, filled with cafes, shops and community life.

Travel outside the city to the Great Wall at Mutianyu, a well-preserved section surrounded by spectacular scenery. A round-trip cable car ride makes the ascent easier. Return to the city for a peaceful stroll through the Summer Palace once a royal retreat and now a popular park filled with lakes and classical Chinese architecture.

Board a high-speed train for a scenic ride to Xi’an. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by your guide and transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours to unwind or explore the local surroundings.

Visit the world-famous Terracotta Army, an awe-inspiring archaeological site of thousands of life-sized warriors. In the afternoon, explore the ancient Xi’an City Wall, one of the best preserved in China. Afterwards, wander through the lively Muslim Quarter, known for its vibrant street food and unique local culture.

Travel by train to Chongqing, where you’ll be met and transferred to the river port to begin the next phase of your adventure. Enjoy the scenery or relax as your cruise journey begins.

Spend two full days aboard a scenic Yangtze River cruise. Relax on deck, take in the dramatic landscapes of the Three Gorges and participate in shore excursions that reveal local life and history along China’s longest river.
