Great Mexico

You will be met at Mexico City International Airport and transferred to the Hilton Mexico City Reforma (or similar) for a 2-night stay. 

Enjoy a guided city tour, taking in the baroque buildings of Constitution Square, the impressive National Palace, and the ruins of Temple Mayor, centrepiece of the ancient Aztec capital. Continue to Teotihuacánarchaeological complex, known to the Aztecs as ‘the place where the Gods are born’. Explore the site’s vast monuments including Pyramid of the Sun, Pyramid of the Moon and the Citadel. Return to Mexico City after lunch.

Travel by bus to the attractive colonial city of Puebla. Visit Santo Domingo church and see the Rosario Chapel, one of the largest works of Mexican baroque art. In the afternoon, travel to Oaxaca and check in to the Holiday Inn Express (or similar) for 2nights.

Visit the archaeological site of Monte Alban, an ancient ceremonial centre featuring awe-inspiring pyramids, tombs and sunken reliefs. Later, explore the city of Oaxaca, once the centre of the Mixtec and Zapotec civilisations. Visit the magnificent baroque Santo Domingo church and browse some local markets.

Make the one-hour journey to Santiago Matatlán, sometimes referred to as the ‘capital of mezcal’. Visit a palenque and a mezcal producer to learn about the process of making this popular agave-based drink. Continue to the city of Tehuantepec, where you will have lunch, then proceed to Tuxtla Gutiérrez. Check in the Marriott hotel (or similar) for an overnight stay.

Take a boat ride through the spectacular Sumidero Canyon, surrounded by lush vegetation and more than 1,000 metres deep in parts. Look out for monkeys, egrets and crocodiles. After lunch, continue to San Cristóbal de las Casas and check in to the Villa Mercedes San Cristobal(or similar) for 2 nights. This afternoon you’ll be at leisure to explore this atmospheric city.

Visit a typical local market this morning, then tour the 16th-century Santo Domingo Church. Meet the indigenous communities of San Juan Chamula and Zinacantán, have a go at making tortilla, and enjoy a shot of ‘pox’ – an ancient Mayan elixir!

Travel to Palenque, making a stop at the Agua Azul waterfalls. The journey is via a scenic mountain road through the verdant Chiapanecanzone and will take around 5 hours. Check in to the Villa Mercedes Palenque hotel (or similar) for an overnight stay.

Explore the impressive Mayan ruins of Palenque, enclosed in the Chiapanecan jungle. The most significant temple at the site is called Temple of the Inscriptions, where explorers discovered Pakal’s tomb with its famous jade mask. Continue to the historic walled town of Campeche, stopping for lunch en route. Take a tour of the city before checking in to the Plaza Campeche (or similar).

Head northeast towards Mérida and visit the impressive ruins at the ancient Mayan city of Uxmal, including the towering Pyramid of the Soothsayer. After lunch, travel onwards to the delightful colonial city of Mérida. Admire the city’s main monuments including the cathedral, Government’s Palaceand the house of Francisco de Montejo. Check in to the NH Collection Merida Paseo Montejo (or similar).

Visit the archaeological site of ChichénItzáthis morning. The best-restored of the Yucatan’s Mayan sites, it features a superb ceremonial ballcourt, El Caracol observatory, the Sacred Cenoteand the reclining figure of ChacMool. After lunch at the site, continue to Riviera Maya, visiting Cenote Saamalen route, including time for a refreshing swim. Check in to the Barcelo Maya Beach hotel on an all-inclusive basis.

Transfer to Cancun International airport for onward travel, or extend your stay in the Riviera Maya.
